This Week’s Rockaway College Basketball Update
A thrilling overtime game highlighted Janelle McManus’s week for the Fairfield Stags. On January 9, the Stags won a 90-82 double overtime game over Canisius College. McManus had a solid game as she scored 17 points while connecting on 9 of 10 from the free throw line. For both teams, overtime has been a constant in their matchups the last few years. Three of the last four meetings between the teams have gone into overtime. Fairfield lost to Niagara 84-74 on January 11 as McManus led all scorers with a game high 25 points on 8 of 15 shooting. The Stags are now 2-2 in the MAAC conference and 4-10 overall. The Harvard Crimson and Tricia Tubridy had a tough week and they lost two games. Tubridy had 9 points and a game high 8 assists in a heartbreaking 93-88 loss to Dartmouth in the first Ivy League conference game of the year on January 10. A back and forth contest, Tubridy seemed to have iced the game after she hit two free throws with a few seconds left in the fourth quarter. Tubridy gave the Crimson an 80-77 lead but Dartmouth point guard Angela Soriaga nailed a 30 foot three pointer as time expired to send it into overtime. Dartmouth and Harvard played an exciting game that featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes. In a non-conference game against Quinnipiac, Tub ridy had a good all-around game in a 76-67 loss with 14 points, 6 rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes. The Crimson’s record is 6-7.
Wendell Gibson got in early foul trouble and only played 17 minutes in a 71-66 loss on the road to Old Dominion. Gibson fouled out after only scoring 8 points and 3 rebounds as Hofstra fell to 2-2 in the conference and 6-8 overall. The Pride trailed the entire second half and only managed to tie the game with 2:00 left in the fourth quarter. Old Dominion broke a 66-66 tie and scored the next fove points to seal the win. Kevin Fitzgerald- in a game telecast locally on Fox Sports Net last Saturay, Kevin Fitzgerald continued his strong play in leading Boston University to a win over Binghamton 63-59. Fitzgerald had 6 assists and no turnovers in 34 minutes. In four conference games, he has 18 assists and 2 turnovers. Boston University (10-3 overall, 4-0 America East conference) has won 10 consecutive games and is the longest streak since winning 13 straight games in the 1996-97 season. Terriers’ junior forward Chaz Carr rebounded his own miss with 35 seconds left in the fourth quarter to break a 59-59 tie. The win tied the overall record of BU Terriers men’s basketball to 910-910 lifetime in the 95 years the program has played. Clare Droesch is improving on her early season slump for the Boston College Eagles. Appearing off the bench in her first 12 games, Droesch has seen more minutes since Big East competition began. In a 70-66 loss to Miami on January 10, Droesch scored 12 points and 6 rebounds in 25 minutes. Adelphi’s Thomas McCormack leads the team in minutes this season with a 34.6 average and is third in team scoring with 10.6 points per game. Scoring 15 points in 15 minutes, Belle Harbor’s Brian Kelly led the Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy to an 87-70 win over Farmingdale State. Kings Point (7-4 overall, 3-1 Skyline conference) won their fifth straight game of the year and won their 38th straight Skyline Conference regular season home game.
