Rugby Fisheads Host 27th Annual 7’s Ruggerfest
By Allan Shaw

Rockaway Rugby’s Bob Johnson, who taught John McCann everything he knows about rugby, makes another break against Montauk.

This Saturday, the Rockaway Fisheads R.F.C. will hosting their 27th Annual Rugby Championship, in nearby Fort Tilden. There will be 24 men’s teams and 6 women’s teams competing for trophies and prizes. Bob Johnson will coordinate the free Youth Division and teach young ruggers ages 12-17 yrs old about the game of rugby. Certified Coaches and top veteran players will instruct. (2 p.m.) We will be using 4 fields so kick-off is scheduled for 10am for all men’s divisions & 11am for the women’s division. Finals are scheduled for 3:30p.m.

Anheuser-Busch of LIC will sponsor the event with a beer garden at the fields. $10 bottomless cups will be offered. DJ Mark will play tunes throughout the day. Thank you to our local team sponsors; Connolly’s Summer Saloon, the Tap & Grill, the Irish Circle, R & R Construction, The Wave, the Rockaway Sunset Diner and Trinity Carpetery. Rockaway Little League will be BBQing for the visiting ruggers, fans and guests.

Beginning at 8pm, the awards ceremony and Post Tournament Party will be held at the Rockaway Rugby Clubhouse, with D.J. & Live entertainment; "Wine with Sue", Rockaway’s #1 Bar Band.  Strictly 21 years or older, do not attempt to enter if not of age.

Rugger Pluggers:  Lenny Nichtern showed up last week looking for a spot on the A-side. Nobody else was there to take attendance so it doesn’t count.   Darren Coursey will play Sat. for the FDNY since retiring from his 3-year rugby career. Hemorrhoids and an ingrown toe nail are all fixed and he’s ready to go.  Kermit Egan has kept his Rockaway A side team a secret ... so secret, only the NYAC guys know who they are. Oakie O’Connor (banned from writing for the Wave) has boosted about the FDNY 7’s players so much, their ranking went from #21 to #3.

Villanova Wildcats incoming freshman class heart-trobs and dynamic duo, Tim Curley and Kevin Lynch will exhibit their rugby talents Sat. and lecture the youth on the dos and don’t of public liquid intake. Ooch Boyland and Dave "Rat" McGowan will extend their NON 7’s playing streak to 8 years straight. Jim Mona will appear as the great Kazoo some time this weekend.

Bob Johnson will MC the Rugby Party in between visits to Connolly’s. Bob will be sucking up to Jeff for the next few years, in hopes, to be the first 40-year-old basement bartender. Since Bob has worked there since he was 18yrs old, his chances are pretty good. The Rugby Clubhouse will celebrate their 10th Anniversary this summer by closing their doors MOST of the time. One date: Wednesday, July 2nd- Volleyball Party at the Clubhouse. Attention Rugby Players: bring water, OFF spray and extra gear.
