Rockaway Players Lead To Midwood Championship

The Midwood Hornets (#6 seed) won the 2003 PSAL A Division NYC Championship in girls softball for the first time in school history. They defeated Tottenville 1-0 at St. John’s University. Although the crown was brought to Brooklyn, some of the heart of the team resides in the Rockaways.

Four former Rockaway Little Leaguers played on the championship team. The pitcher, Dawn Duggan, a junior from Belle Harbor threw a five hitter in the championship game against the Tottenville Pirates from Staten Island on June 8th. Rockaway Beach’s Alison McCarthy, a senior who plays catcher, threw out 2 base runners with perfect throws and was superb behind the plate. Lauren Kentouris a left fielder from Belle Harbor, who is in her junior year, drove the game’s only run in on a single to right field in the third inning and took away a potential extra base it with a running catch on a liner in the 7th inning. Freshman Michelle Buchwalter who is also from Rockaway, has worked all season on her own skills to prepare her to step up in the future, and has supported her teammates.
