Puerto Rican Flag, Singed, Ripped
By Howard Schwach

In what police are terming "a possible bias incident," a Puerto Rican flag attached to a home on East 8 Road in Broad Channel was vandalized early last Sunday morning.

According to published reports about the incident, Kathleen Watkins Cruz, 38, hung the flag to honor Puerto Rican Day, as she regularly does with Irish and Polish flags as well.

Cruz told police that somebody tore down the flag and attempted to set it on fire.

"I'm praying that it was an isolated incident, that it was teenagers drinking in the middle of the night," Cruz told Alice McQuillan of The Daily News. "I have no problems with my neighbors."

Police sources at the office of the deputy commissioner for public information say that there have been no arrests and that an investigation by the department's Bias Crime squad is ongoing.

The Wave was unable to contact either Cruz or her two children, Samantha or Nick, prior to press time.
