It's a good thing Duane Reade sells Excedrine-their driveway headache is getting worse. Two city agencies are taking a close look at their parking lot curb-cut, and traffic conditions on Beach Channel Drive, and may force significant changes there. The city's Department of Buildings (DOB) will be issuing Duane Reade a violation for operating the store without a certificate of occupancy, also known as a C.O., according to agency spokesperson Sid Dinsay. "Due to a couple of outstanding issues-length of the curb-cut being one of them-we did not issue a C.O.," Dinsay said. The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) visited the property this week, according to Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Liz Sulik. DOT representatives stood at the Beach 116 Street and Beach Channel Drive intersection shaking their heads, and were nearly run over Sulik said. The Wave first reported the new store's driveway and traffic issues more than a month ago, before Duane Reade's grand opening. Since moving from the Waldbaum's shopping center to the new location, more and more people have taken notice of the unsafe situation that exists for both pedestrians, and drivers, there. "It's extraordinarily dangerous," Sulik said, adding that the Chamber intends to formally express that opinion to the city. She said the danger and confusion among those passing through that intersection is apparent to anyone observing it. At press time it was not clear what the DOT and DOB would require as a solution. Dinsay did say that the DOB was likely to require a correction of the curb-cut. Duane Reade is currently suing Tribute Park artist Patrick Clark and The Wave. | |||||
