Beach, Boardwalk Protest Set For July 9

Reacting to the ban on using the beach after 9 p.m. and the boardwalk after 10 p.m. each night, a Rockaway activist has called for a mass rally on the boardwalk and Beach 116 Street at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9.

Lew Simon, the Democratic District Leader for Rockaway, who has coordinated many demonstrations in the past, says that he is "fed up" with the rules that keep residents from using the boardwalk and beach.

Simon urges all Rockaway residents to join him on the boardwalk. "If you are fed up like we are with the fact that we cannot even walk on our boardwalk in the late evening and enjoy the beautiful fresh air of Rockaway’s beaches, if you are fed up with the idea that you come home from work at 6 p.m. after a hot day’s work, and you won’t be able to take a dip in the water, join us," Simon says.

"If you are afraid that you might be found on the beach without the proper identification and be issued a ticket or arrested, join us," he added.

Simon urges those who attend the rally to "bring your beach chairs, kites, surfboards and fishing rods."
