A Special Day In Albany For Area Students

A routine field trip to the State Capitol in Albany turned out to be a special event for students of Middle School 180-Q when they accepted an invitation from Assemblywoman Audrey I. Pheffer and Senator Serphin R. Maltese. The students came as part of the Pheffer/Maltese annual excursions to witness state government in action.

During this visit, students of M. S. 180-Q, along with teachers and parents, brought with them a book written by former P.S. 114’s students and coordinated through the efforts of Christina Russell, Anne-Marie Ruggiero and ex-firefighter Steve Buscemi.

The book, "A Salute To Bravery," is a collection of poems in honor of the heroes of September 11. Sadly, Chris Russell lost her brother-in-law, Firefighter Stephen Russell, in the tragedy, and was key in helping the children cope with the horrific events through writing. Their book was completed, and during their visit to the Capitol, two of the student authors had an opportunity to present Speaker Sheldon Silver with a copy.

Adding to the solemn yet uplifting tone of the presentation was the fact that the students of M.S. 180-Q were in the Assembly Chamber when Pheffer and her colleagues unanimously passed a Resolution calling upon Mayor Bloomberg to abandon his plan to close a number of firehouses.
