Greater New York Ice Hockey League – New York Stars
By Sharon Monchinski

As the Zamboni cut the ice for the final time, ending the Stars 2002/ 2003 season, it gave the team the opportunity to reflect on their accomplishments.

Challenged by their demanding coaching staff, the boys responded by developing from talented individuals, to a highly effective team.

The team played a total of 55 games during the season.  20 of which were Long Island Hockey League contests. The remaining games were divided between 3 tournaments and exhibition games, usually against teams of a higher classification.  This allowed the team to develop and play with confidence, while showing they could compete successfully against higher rated teams. This was proved by their overall record of 39 wins, 11 losses and 5 ties and a season in which they scored 274 goals, while allowing a total of only 134 goals.

Forward Alex Mitic led the team in scoring with 26 goals and 48 assists for 74 points. Forward Charles Gotaed led the team in goals with 41 and Ricky Cibrano played all 55 games in goal with a 39-11-5 record and 8 shutouts. On April 24, the Greater New York City Ice Hockey League will hold their annual awards dinner at Gargiulos on Coney Island.
