For the first time, Rockaway Artists Alliance will present two separate exhibitions simultaneously in sTudio 6 Gallery and sTudio 7 Gallery, Fort Tilden. The shows run from May 10 through June 29, 2003. Opening reception is Saturday, May 10, 1-4 PM. In sTudio 6 "Through the Lens: A Member Photography Exhibition" will showcase some of the finest talent in the organization. In studio 7 "Unbroken: An Exhibition of Hope and Determination" is a compelling exhibit of photographs taken by Afghani and Vietnamese street children and young Bhutanese refugees in Nepal under projects established by PhotoVoice (PV). Fifty powerful images taken by those who have lived the lives recorded in those images. Fifty images that tell a story that cannot be seen anywhere else. Fifty images in a show that is a testament to the indomitable human spirit to survive and create under any circumstances. Fifty voices of hope and determination. RAA takes this opportunity to thank Bryan's Auto, Inc. for its generous contribution to "Destinations: Travel to foreign and not-so-foreign places." It is this sort of sense of community by business in partnership with arts and culture that must be applauded. It is this sort of partnership that helps both business and the community. The last RAA general meeting took longer than usual. But at 9:45 p.m., no one was leaving. That is how engrossing was the talk/slide show by Edward Coppola. Ed creates fantastical dioramas, two of which are in "Destinations," running weekends through April 27 in sTudio 6. You can always expect something very special at each RAA general meeting. Catch the next on Monday, May 12 and every second Monday of the month at 7:30 PM in building T-149, Fort Tilden. Speaking of something very special at Fort Tilden - Dreams, magic, imagination, myth. All are elements of the amazing 70-foot commissioned mural, "Just Say 'Yes'," that Geoff Rawling has been creating in sTudio 7. This wondrous work of art will finally be "unveiled" at a reception on Sunday, April 27, 1-3 PM in sTudio 7 Gallery. Wine, cheese and live music. Admission is free. More details in next week's paper.
