Response To Jolting Issue

Dear Editor;

I was most interested in reading The Wave's December 21 article entitled, "A Jolting Issue."

I certainly understand and respect the people of Far Rockaway who have some concerns about the new plant that will be built in the Bayswater region by Florida Power & Light. No one likes additional power plants in their neighborhood.

Having said this, however, let me assure the residents of Far Rockaway that this facility is needed to provide enough electricity on the Rockaway Peninsula to meet the ever-growing demand that we are seeing in the community. The fact is, while we have enough electricity to meet normal daily requirements in the Rockaways, we must send electricity from Long Island into Far Rockaway on the hottest days of the year because there simply is not enough generated in the Rockaways itself.

We are trying to install enough generation so that the Rockaways can be self-sufficient for their energy needs should there be a disruption in the lines between Nassau County and the Rockaways. We will continue to work closely with the community to try and ensure that this new facility is as quiet and clean as humanly possible. Florida Power & Light has already built a new plant in the Rockaways and I think it is working quite well for the community.

We will continue to dedicate ourselves to assisting the people of Far Rockaway with the best electric service possible.

RICHARD M. KESSEL
CHAIRMAN, LIPA
