Pheffer Battles ‘540’ Advertisers
By Gary G. Toms

Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer announced this week that she will vigorously pursue those responsible for the proliferation of misleading and deceptive advertising signs posted on telephone poles throughout Far Rockaway.

"My office has been looking intro the matter in order to stop such deceptive advertising," said Pheffer.

"Verizon Phone Company advised my office that the numbers in question, 540-HOME, 540-JOBS, and 540-FREE, are currently out of service. Please review your telephone billing statements and advise my office if you were billed for calls to these numbers."

Pheffer also notes that not only is the small print about potential charges deceptive, state law clearly mandates that all calls which charge fees must disclose all fees at the beginning of the call. Those failing to do so are in violation of state law.

"I have taken the liberty of contacting the Office of the State Attorney General to take action and investigate these deceptive ads," said the Assemblywoman.

Pheffer took the opportunity to submit a copy of the letter addressed to the State Attorney General to The Wave.
