for larger version       PAL Programs Offer Fun For Kids During the summer, the Police Athletic League, PAL, closes off streets and other public areas throughout New York City to give children safe, supervised places to play. Play-sites offer sports, arts, games, crafts, music, and dance. PAL will operate in some 233 neighborhoods this summer, including 151 play-site programs, 11 day camps, 52 sports locations and 10 child care programs. Mobile reading teachers will bring a variety of books to selected locations to encourage summer reading. Play-sites, which include organized play areas in playgrounds, schools or actual streets, will operate a total of seven weeks. Locations will be open Monday through Friday, and will offer full-day programs. PAL’s summer program also includes baseball and softball leagues for boys and girls, baseball "rookie leagues," police precinct programs, evenings teenage programs, five Head start programs and five day care programs. PAL day camps are extended through August 30th, thanks to a generous grant from the New York Life Foundation. Another five play-sites are sponsored by the Metropolitan Life Foundation. Founded in 1914, the Police Athletic League is the largest, independent, nonprofit youth organization in New York City. PAL serves 70,000 boys and girls between the ages of three and 21 each year with recreational, educational, cultural, and social activities. The festivities kicked off on July 9, 2002, and hundreds of PAL children will be taking part in traditional city sidewalk games like skellly, double dutch jump rope, nok hockey, hopscotch, punchball, volleyball and basketball during the opening of the PAL’s play-street program. The festivities will held in the PAL Harlem Center, 441 Manhattan Avenue, and will run from 10:00 am through 11:30 am.
