Meeks Mourns Loss of Johnson

Representatives from the office of Congressman Gregory W. Meeks, and the political arena, are mourning the death of Meeks’ Chief of Staff, Josephine Johnson. Johnson died on July 4, after months of battling a severe illness. She was laid to rest on July 9. Meeks offered the following statements shortly after her death.

"I speak for thousands of Queens residents when mourning the death today of Josephine Johnson, and join many others in saying that she was my friend," said Meeks.

"As my Chief of Staff, and a public servant for more than twenty years,
Josephine Johnson rendered the southeastern Queens community
extraordinary, selfless service. Josephine Johnson accomplished greatly because she cared immensely. No one knew better than she how government and the community worked. She was here to make a difference and she did."

Meeks acknowledged that Johnson was very concerned about the youth, and that she was actively involved with helping them.

"She was a tireless advocate for young people and helped shape a generation of young Americans. Josephine Johnson was unique; she brought the light of joy in living, and the heat of her intellect, to every occasion. She was extremely effective and she kept the needs of the constituents in the forefront. On behalf of my wife Simone-Marie, my family and staff, I extend our deepest condolences to Josephine's entire family. We all will miss her," stated the Congressman.
