‘Peace At Home’ License Plates to Raise Revenue

Governor George E. Pataki announced has proposed legislation to help combat domestic violence by allowing the sale of custom license plates bearing the message, "Peace at Home." The revenue generated from the sale of the plates would be used to support a newly established Domestic Violence Awareness Fund.

"This legislation would help strengthen our battle to combat the scourge of domestic violence by generating additional resources and heightening public awareness," Govenor Pataki said. "The funds raised through the sale of the "Peace at Home" license plates will be used to help us spread the word that domestic violence will not be tolerated in New York State."

This bill would create a custom license plate bearing the message "Peace at Home," sending a positive anti-domestic violence message to residents of New York State and across the country. In addition, purchase of the plate would generate revenue, to be deposited in the Domestic Violence Awareness Fund, to expand public awareness and education activities conducted by the Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence.

The Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence conducts annual and ongoing public awareness campaigns, which include public service announcements, bumper stickers, brochures and posters. The Office also provides training and holds conferences to raise awareness and increase understanding of domestic violence among the general public and professionals who provide services to victims.

While new laws attempt to improve protection and services for victims and increase accountability of offenders, much work remains in educating the public about domestic violence.
