Where Is Far Rockaway?

Dear Editor;

I was born in Far Rockaway and lived there for 40 years before it became a slum area in the early 60's.  Now I notice that the whole peninsular is called, "the Rockaways."  What happened to Arverne, Edgemere, etc?

I'm reading the Wave over the Internet and your Memorial Day parade was held in the Rockaways.  We used to consider the Rockaways as Rockaway Beach.  Now it seems to take in from Far Rockaway up to Breezy Point.

Are those little towns passé?  When did Far Rockaway take in the whole peninsula?
