for larger version       More Chances To Take The A-Train Commuters who ride the train from Rockaway to Manhattan each day have long taken Duke Ellington’s advice to "Take The A Train" to heart. In fact, as many know, the A Train is virtually the only game in town for commuters, and there has long been a complaint that the peninsula is "underserved" by the Metropolitan Transit Authority MTA). That might well be changing. Transit officials have announced that they are planning to boost service on that underserved line, not because of complaints, but because of a seven percent increase in ridership on the line after September 11, when PATH service all but disappeared. Beginning in May, the MTA will run fifteen extra round trip on weekdays on the A Line. "Trains will be less crowded and commuters will have to wait about four minutes less for a train than they have previously," said TA President Lawrence Reuter. The expanded service will be concentrated during the morning and evening rush hours. "This expansion will effect the entire line, including Rockaway," an MTA spokesperson told The Wave. "Everybody who rides the A Train during rush hours will catch a break." Some Rockaway riders lauded the idea, but said that they would wait and see how it impacted on Rockaway prior to getting excited about the expansion plan. "It would be awesome if there were more Rockaway Park trains in the plan," says Amy Schwach, who rides the A Train to her job each weekday. "Anything that reduces the need to take the shuttle from Broad Channel to Rockaway Park would be welcome." Schwach adds that she would like to see more A Train express service after rush hour in the evening so those who work late would not have to wait at Broad Channel. "If this affects Rockaway," she adds. "It would be great."
