Spare The Children

Mayor Bloomberg's proposed budget cuts will affect a number of services and agencies throughout New York City, but no cut will be more harmful than those slated for education. At a time when most people are concerned about frighteningly low reading and math scores, and the fact that more and more kids are dropping out of school at an early age to engage in criminal behavior, the logical thing to do would be to find a way to pump more money into education. Instead, Bloomberg, like his predecessor, has sharpened his fiscal dagger and thrown it at the most sacred of cows. Young people already have to deal with the possibility of not having jobs this summer; not being able to totally utilize goods and services, like libraries and finding outlets to avoid falling into the trappings of gangs and crime. Budget cuts in education will further damage the society and our youth. Adults, government agencies and institutions constantly complain about the youth in this city, but the very people who are doing most of the complaining are the ones that have a direct involvement in their demise, as legislators and fiscal policy representatives. Mayor Bloomberg, find a way to save money for education. Find a way to save our kids.
