Obituaries Flight 587 Victim Kathleen C. Lawler was killed on the morning of November 12, 2001 as segments of Flight 587 smashed into her Belle Harbor home. She was 48 years old. Kathleen worked as an Executive Secretary with the Diocese of Brooklyn. She is survived by her husband, Thomas; her children, Brendan, Caitlin, Jennifer and the late Christopher; her mother, Anne K. Blum; and her siblings, William J., Francis X., G. Kevin, Anne Marie Greene, Maureen DelVecchio, and Mary Ellen Olsen. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, November 16, 10 a.m., at St. Francis De Sales Church. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. will take place at St. John’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Kathie and Chris Lawler Scholarship Fund for Bishop Kearny High School. Christopher was attending St. John’s University as a second year Law student. He is survived by his father, Thomas; his mother, the late Kathleen C. James Banks James Banks, born in Greensboro, Georgia, was a 51 year resident of Rockaway. He died on November 9, 2001. James was employed as a construction worker most of his life. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Nonie Bell Gresham, Estelle Banks and Gus Butler. He is survived by his children, Usher, Darryl, Vera and Sandy Banks, Dorothea Banks Richardson, Marion Middleton, Melina Madison, Karen Williams, Gus Caldwell, Josephine Butler and Nora Charles; a host of grandchildren and other family members. Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home was held at Rockville Cemetery. Eileen Bartley Eileen Bartley, born in Brooklyn, New York, was a lifelong resident of Rockaway Point. She passed away on November 13, 2001. Eileen worshipped at St. Thomas More Church and worked as a supervisor of training for AT&T. She was a member of the St. Thomas More Rosary Society; the Pioneer Club of AT&T; and the St. Joseph College Alumni. She is preceded in death by her brother, John. She is survived by her sister, Lauretta Smith; her nephew, Thomas and wife AnnMarie; her niece, Laurie Burns and husband James; her grandnieces and nephews, James, Laura, Paul, Kevin, Kayla and Tommy; and loving friend, Henry Kisker. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc was held at Holy Cross Cemetery. Madelin Donohue Madelin Donohue, born in New York City, New York, was a longtime resident of Rockaway Beach. She passed away on November 14, 2001. She was 91 years old. Madelin is preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Joseph Donohue. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Barry; her son, Robert Donohue; her grandchildren, Darrell, Patrick, Meg, Erin, Christopher, Daniel and Colin; and her great grandchildren, Beth Ann, P.J., Daniel, Michael, Liam and Madelin Barry, Timothy and Peter Donohue, and Olivia Zito. Joseph C. Duncan Joseph C. Duncan, born in Howard Beach, New York, was a lifelong resident of Rockaway Park. He passed away on November 7, 2001. Joseph worshipped at St. Rose of Lima and worked as a painter. He is survived by his mother, Audrey (Nee Wells) Duncan; his sisters, Joyce Quimpo and Janice Duncan; and his brothers, James, John and Jay. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. was held at St. Johns Cemetery. Anthony Fascelli Anthony Fascelli, born in Italy, was a 33 year resident of Rockaway. He passed away on November 2, 2001. Anthony was the chef at Gabarino’s Restaurant for over 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Catherine (nee Varrone) Fascelli; his daughter, Theresa Ferna and husband Frank; his son, Anthony J. Fascelli; and grandchildren, Brian, Matthew and Justin. Interment under the direction of Massapequa Funeral Home was held at St. Charles Cemetery, in Farmingdale, New York. Catherine Gravina Catherine Gravina, born in New York City, New York, was a 13 year resident of Rockaway Park. She passed away on November 9, 2001. Catherine worshipped at St. Francis De Sales and spent most of her life as a homemaker. She is survived by her son, Robert J. Gravina; her daughter, Gale Ehrman; and her niece, Barbara Burke. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. was held at Calvary Cemetery. Anthony S. Guida Anthony S. Guida, of Far Rockaway, passed away on November 14, 2001. Anthony is survived by his wife, Olga (nee Sierer); his children, Steven, Michael and Denise Brugna; his siblings, Terry, Madeline Maltese and Sal Guida; and his seven grandchildren. Interment under the direction of Lawrence Funeral Chapel was held at Pinelawn Memorial Cemetery. Father Francis J. McGee Father Francis J. McGee, parochial vicar at St. Rose of Lima Parish since 1966, died peacefully at Calvary Hospital on November 12, 2001. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Father McGee attended St Francis of Assisi School, Cathedral College and Immaculate Conception Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood on April 3, 1945. In 1966, he was assigned to St. Rose of Lima. He was an avid reader, golfer and fisherman. Father McGee had a special love for music of all kinds and played the accordion and keyboard. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as his family at St. Rose. The Mass of Transferal will be celebrated on Friday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on November 17, 10:30 a.m. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. will be held in the Priests Circle at St. John’s Cemetery. Anna V. Rackett Anna V. Rackett, born in Brooklyn, New York, passed away on November 6, 2001, in Kunkletown, Pennsylvania. She was 84 years old. Anna is preceded in death by her husband Jerome. She is survived by her three daughters, Geraldine Kelly, Annie and husband Vincent Aquino, and Ellen E. and husband William Walker; two sons, John and wife Gertrude, and Thomas and wife Lauren; 20 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Interment under the direction of Donald N. Gower Funeral Home was held at Calvary Cemetery. Clarence W. Sherwood III Clarence W. Sherwood III, born in Rockaway, New York, was a lifelong resident of Rockaway and the founder of The Wave newspaper. He died on November 10, 2001. He was 80 years old. Clarence worshipped at St. Francis De Sales and was co-owner of C & S Carpet. While serving in the United States Army, during World War II, he was the recipient of the Purple Heart on three different occasions. He is survived by his wife, Doris Sherwood (nee Watkinson); his daughters, Pamela Luchansky and Donna Sherwood and Doris Columbo; his son, James Sherwood; his sister Patricia Roberts; and his grandchildren, Ariane, Katie, Pamela and Jamie. A Memorial Mass will be held on November 19, 9:45 a.m., at St. Francis De Sales. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. will be held at Holy Rood Cemetery. Arlene Slattery Arlene Slattery, born in Jackson Heights, New York, was a 45 year resident of Rockaway Beach. She passed away on November 11, 2001. Arlene worshipped at St. Rose of Lima. She is survived by her mother, Elizabeth Dinan Slattery; her long time companion, Al Byrne; her sisters, Ellen Milmore and Linda Loos; one niece; five nephews; one grand niece and three grandnephews. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. was held at Calvary Cemetery. Leon Rondell Travick Leon Rondell Travick was a lifelong resident of Rockaway. He died on November 7, 2001, at the age of 27. Leon was an EMT specialist and Associate Minister of Macedonia Baptist Church. He is survived by his mother, Marie Maggette; his sisters, Jamela, Paula, LaRonda and Marlania; his brothers, Antoine and Michael; his grandmother and Stephanie Blake; and a host of other relatives and friends. Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney’s Funeral Home was held at Rockville Cemetery. Wake services for Helen and Thomas Concannon will be held at Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home on Sunday, November 18, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held on November 19, 11 a.m., at St. Francis De Sales. |
