for larger version       Suggestion For A Memorial Dear Editor; I read with interest Liz Sulik's comments in The Wave (November 10, 2001) regarding the different ideas the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce has received for a memorial commemorating the World Trade Center victims. Although no one has asked for my opinion, here's my idea of what might be an appropriate monument to honor our friends, neighbors and heroes who lost their lives on September 11th. Imagine two, sturdy, white marble columns, each approximately three meters tall, representing the twin towers, surrounded by cobblestones in the shape of lower Manhattan, representing the bedrock upon which they were built. The victims’ names would be engraved vertically on the sides of these towers, like the slender beams that rose majestically up the sides of the WTC. This simple but elegant design would not only remind us of our human loss and the loss of a New York icon, but more importantly could help inspire us to rebuild our lives and our city in their memory. The soon to be built 116th St. Bayside Park enjoys one of Rockaway's best views of downtown New York, so it is appropriate that the WTC memorial be erected there. I'm sure that the Rockaway Artist Alliance can come up with a suitable design for a memorial and, in so doing, allow this small but strategic parcel of land to serve a dual purpose. First, it is the perfect place to honor those Rockaway and Broad Channel residents that lost their lives on that fateful day when our lives changed forever. Second, it can provide Rockaway residents with bay access for kayaks and rowing shells or simply a place to relax and enjoy the view of the bay and the Manhattan skyline. In years to come it will also be a wonderful vantage point for us to watch a new World Trade Center emerge from the ashes, and with it, our spirits. RICK HORAN
