Obituaries Fallen WTC Hero Richard D. Allen, a 31-year old lifelong resident of Rockaway Beach, was a victim of the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center. He became a victim of this tragedy as he heroically saved lives in the line of duty. On September 11, Richie was doing what he loved to do; he was helping others. Richie was a probationary New York City firefighter with Engine 4/ Ladder 15 in Manhattan. Although he was with the fire department for a short time, he fulfilled a lifelong dream. Prior to becoming a fireman, Richie held several other jobs with New York City. He worked for the Sanitation Department; he was a teacher with the New York City Board of Education; and he spent his summers working as a lifeguard in Rockaway. All of his jobs entailed serving the people of New York City and making a difference in people’s lives. He is survived by his parents, Richie Sr. and Gail; two brothers, Luke and Matthew; three sisters; Maggie, Lynn, Judy and her husband Mark; close family relatives, Kathy, Charlie Sr, Charlie Jr., and Katie Marquardt; as well as many other dear friends and relatives. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 9, 11 a.m., at St. Frances de Sales Church to honor his memory and celebrate his life. Fallen WTC Hero Stephen P. Russell, born in Rockaway Beach, New York, was a lifelong resident of Arverne, New York. He was killed in the line of duty during the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center. Stephen worshipped at St. Rose of Lima. He was a member of Fire Engine Company 55 for the Fire Department of New York City. He was also a member of the Carpenter’s Union. He is survived by his parents, Clifford and Marie (Nee Mittmann); his brothers, Clifford and wife Christina, and William and wife Adrienne; three nephews, Evan, Cliff and Christopher; and a niece, Erika. Visitation will be held at Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home on Friday, November 2 from 2-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. The funeral mass will take place on Saturday, November 3, 10 a.m., at St. Rose of Lima. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. will be held at St. Johns Cemetery. Bender, of Freeport, New York, was a former long-time Belle Harbor resident who passed away on October 19, 2001. Martin was a long-time employee of the Green Bus Lines and a United States Marine Corp veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Maureen (nee Farrell); his children, Kathy, Martin, John (Alanna) and Joseph; his brother, Richard; and his granddaughter, Shannon. Marty was given a full Christian and U.S. Marine Corp burial. Interment was held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in Valhalla, New York. John Callaghan John Callaghan, born in Brooklyn to Mary and Eugene, passed away on October 30, 2001. John was retired from the New York City Fire Department, and he proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He raised his family in Staten Island and then retired to Florida. He was also was a member of the American Legion. He is preceded in death by his son, Christopher; his brothers, Hughie, Sonny and Dick; and his sister, Lily. He is survived by his children, John, Kevin and Marina, Gregg and Andrea, Trinka and Joe, and Tom and Karen; his sister, Mary Hilton; his brother Joe; 15 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. A Viewing will be held at Hanley’s Funeral Home, in Staten Island, on November 4, from 7-9 p.m. and on November 5, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will take place at St. Charles Catholic Church, in Staten Island, on November 6 at 9:30 a.m. Gertrude Conneely Gertrude Conneely was a lifelong resident of Broad Channel, who passed away on October 12, 2001. She was 85 years old. Gertrude started cheerleading in the 1960’s, coaching many girls over the years to many championships. She was also the first woman to be elected to the B.C.A.C. Hall of Fame. She is preceded in death by her husband, Martin; and her brother William O’Keefe. She is survived by her daughter Patricia Purack and son-in-law Allan; a son, Jack and daughter-in-law Rita; a sister-in-law, Angie O’Keefe; seven grandchildren, Brian, Eileen, Tom, Melissa, Jaclyn, Matthew, and Mickey; and four great-grandchildren, Erin, Jennifer, Karalyn, and Nicholas. Interment under the direction of Hillebrand Funeral Home was held at St. Charles Cemetery, in Long Island. William J. Herrmann William J. Herrmann was a 43-year resident of Rockaway Point, coming from Ridgewood, Queens. He died on October 28, 2001. William was a retired New York City Police Detective, and he was a veteran of the United States Navy. He is survived by his wife, Florence (Nee Burns) Herrmann; his sons, Alick and wife Barbara, Douglas and wife Dorothy; his daughter, Julianna Madden and husband Robert; and 8 grandchildren. Hedwig T. Blumstein Judge Hedwig T. Blumstein Judge was a 50-year resident of Rockaway Park, coming from New Britain, Connecticut. She passed away on October 26, 2001. Hedwig worshipped at St. Frances De Sales Church and worked as an office receptionist. She was a member of the St, Francis De Sales Golden Age Club; St. Camillus Seniors; and St. Rose of Lima Seniors. She is preceded in death by her husband, Francis Judge; her brother, Raymond; and her sister, Michalina. She is survived by her daughter, Francesann Judge; her sisters, Helen, Agnes and Paula; her sister-in-law, Veronica; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc. was held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery. Josephine Joan Miles Josephine Joan Miles, of Levittown, formerly of Rockaway, passed away on October 27, 2001. Josephine was employed with Jamaica Savings Bank for over 25 years. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward John; and her son, John Edward. She is survived by her children, Edward John, Jr., Caroline McGuire, and Joan Ceccato; her sisters, Agnes Greco, Ann Brandenberg, Celia Greco, Claire Havel, Theresa Quadrozzi and Dorothy Ferrante; her brother, Matthew Greco; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Interment under the direction of Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home was held at St. Charles Cemetery, in Pinelawn, New York. Eileen Molinari Eileen Molinari, born in Manhattan, New York, was a 30-year resident of Belle Harbor, coming from Brooklyn. She died on November 1, 2001. Eileen worshipped at St. Francis De Sales Church, and she spent most of her life as a homemaker. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dominick. She is survived by her sons, Nicholas and Robert; her daughter, Donna; her brother, Robert Donovan; and her grandchildren, Daniel, Sean and Devin Milmore, and Christian Molinari. Visitation will be held at Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home on November 3 and 4, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Francis De Sales on November 5, starting at 9:45 a.m. Interment under the direction of Denis S. Michael Sheehy Michael Sheehy, born in Newcastle West, County Limerick, Ireland, was a five year resident of Rockaway, who passed away on October 30, 2001. He was 80 years old. Mike was a lifelong resident of the Fordham section of the Bronx. Many will remember him from the Sheehy Brothers Barber Shop. He is preceded in death by his son, Thomas; and his daughter, Noreen Fleming. He is survived by his wife, Anne; his children, Rosemarie, Deirdre and Christopher Connolly; Denis and Kecia; and three grandchildren, Christopher, Danny, and Amanda. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on November 3, 10:30 a.m., at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church, in the Bronx. Interment will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in Valhalla, New York. Jane E. Tana Jane E. Tana, born in Manhattan, New York, was a 40-year resident of Rockaway Point, coming from Jackson Heights, Queens. She passed away on October 30, 2001. Jane worshipped at St. Thomas More Church. She worked as an administrative assistant for Burlington Industries. She also was a member of the St. Thomas More Golden Age Club. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert. She is survived by her son, William Cunningham; her daughters, Jane Rizzi and Rosemary Scheriff; and 12 grandchildren. Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor was held at St. Charles Cemetery. |
