Cummings To Address Concerns of Disabled

Assemblywoman Pauline Rhodd-Cummings announced that Assembly Democrats approved legislation aimed at making New York more accessible and responsive to the needs of the disabled. The 18-bill package focused on employment, accessibility, transportation, equipment safety and other imperative issues critical for enabling disabled New Yorkers to live a typical life.

"I am proud to join with my Democratic colleagues in supporting this legislative package which addressed several problems facing people with disabilities in New York City," stated Assemblywoman Rhodd-Cummings. "These bills will not only protect the rights of the disabled but it will also help people with disabilities to live independently and contribute to our state’s economy, culture and community. I am gratified to give my commitment and support to such crucial proposals that affects so many of my constituents."

May 14 – 18 marked Disability Awareness Week at the Capitol in Albany. Disability organizations and businesses that provide services for the disabled came out to lend their support to this legislation and to provide information and give demonstrations of disability equipment from items as small as medical equipment to large machines like cars.

"These proposals contain procedures that would require government and public facilities to make reasonable alteration to accommodate the disabled; authorize the State’s Office of Temporary and disability Assistance to establish programs to help reimburse those with disabilities who need adaptive equipment to drive; require agents of Automated Teller Machines to provide audio and visual messages to customers, and require aisles for handicapped parking spaces to be at least eight feet wide and clearly marked," explained the Queens lawmaker.

The Assembly’s budget resolution also increases funding for vocational and educational services for individuals with disabilities which Assembly Democrats hope will increase activities performed by the disabled and assist them in becoming independent members of their communities.

Assemblywoman Rhodd-Cummings pledged to lend her support to legislation and other initiatives that will improve the lives of citizens with disabilities.
