73rd Annual Communion Breakfast A Success Over 250 people attended Rockaway Council Knights of Columbus and Columbiettes 73rd Annual Corporate Communion Breakfast held at the council on Sunday, April 29. Mass was celebrated at St. Camillus Church by Msgr. William F. Burke who has served as the Council’s Chaplain for the past 53 years. Following Mass, the St. Camillus Band along with the K of C color guard led the line of march back to the Council. Special thanks are in order to the captain of the 100 precinct and his officers for providing an escort, ensuring that all arrived safely. Msgr. Burke welcomed the community and blessed the food and all present. He stated that the turnout was "magnificent" and he was thrilled to see so many of his friends and neighbors joining together to continue the tradition for the 73rd consecutive year. Msgr. also advised that this was his 53rd communion breakfast with the K of C. He also acknowledged that Grand Knight Joe Valenti was recovering at home from recent surgery and that all wished him a speedy recovery. The Council was honored to have Father James Devine serve as the keynote speaker. Fr. Devine was raised in the Rockaways. He graduated from St. Francis DeSales grammar school, and would later become the Pastor of St. Rose of Lima Church for ten years. He presently serves as Chaplain at Our Lady of the Skies Chapel, Kennedy Airport. Following tradition, service awards were presented to those Knights and Columbiettes that throughout the years have served their organizations above and beyond the call of duty. Barbara J. Morris, President of the Columbiettes presented the Columbiette of the Year Award to Mae Heggerty. Mae has been an active member for over 50 years. Other service awards were presented to Jerri Vasselman and Jane Tubridy for their years of dedicated service. Deputy Grand Knight Jim Hurley presented the Knight of the Year Award to Larry Kelly for his many years of service to the Council. Larry presently serves as the Council Chancellor as well as the C&B Chairman. He has been endorsed by the nominating committee to serve as the next Grand Knight. Terrence Mooney was presented with a plaque in recognition of his unselfish giving of time and energy helping out behind the scenes. When something needed to be done, Terrence was always there to assist in any way he could. He is an asset to the entire organization. Last on the agenda was the highlight of the day. Past Grand Knight and current Treasurer for the Queens County Conference, Frank Bagley presented a proclamation issued unanimously by the members of Rockaway Council naming the Council Hall "The Richard Knott Sr. Hall." A beautiful plaque and portrait were unveiled honoring a man who dedicated over half his life to the Council. Mr. Knott had served two separate terms as Grand Knight of the Council. At the time of his death in early March, he was serving as Trustee and House Chairman. He was an extremely active member for over 40 years. Mr. Bagley stated that "Richie’s wisdom, kindness to all and commitment to the K of C was an inspiration to all and exemplified the virtues of the K of C, namely Charity, Unity, and Fraternity." The committee would like to thank all that assisted and attended the 73rd Annual Breakfast and hopes to see everyone again next year. Special thanks to John Hennessey, John Fleming, and John O’Brien for their assistance not only in preparing the tasty breakfast, but in the unveiling of the memorial as well.
