Gateway Beaches Lack Lifeguards

Marc A. Koenings, general superintendent of Gateway National Recreation Area, has announced that the beaches of the New Jersey-New York metro area field unit of the National park Service will probably not fully staffed with lifeguards until mid-to –late June.

The Gateway beaches that opened for swimming this past Memorial Day weekend are located at Sandy Hook in New Jersey, as well as Jacob Riis Park, in Queens, and Great Kills Park, in Staten Island, New York.

Lifeguard protection at the designated swimming areas of these locations will be provided from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., every day of the week, from this weekend through Labor Day.

Gen. Supt. Koenings invites the public to enjoy Gateway’s many fine recreational opportunities, but cautions the public to swim only at designated swimming areas where and when lifeguards are on duty.
