Obituaries

William Green

Loved By Many

William Green, the third of seven children was born to the late James and Katherine Green in Swainsboro, Georgia.

William attended the public school of Swainsboro. As a child and through his life he loved swimming and being with family and friends.

He relocated to Far Rockaway, NY. He worked as a construction worker and labored to help construct many beautiful sights which are still standing such as the flag pole near Mott Avenue. He later left construction and became self-employed, doing business as William Green Rubbish Removal.

William died on May 19, 2001. Two sons, Curtis Green and Jerry Brundage, preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Elizabeth Green; a daughter, Janice Stevenson and her husband Furman Stevenson from Georgia; a son, Dwayne Green and his wife, Anita Green; six grandchildren; a host of stepchildren, Velma Green, Theresa Green, James Green, Ralph Green, Thelma Gillis, Dorothy Samuels, Delores Brundage, Alonzo Brundage; twenty-five grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; brother Arthur Green; sisters Ida Green, Maxine Green, and Delores Knight; four aunts, one uncle, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Interment under the direction of Chatmon and Benson Funeral Home, Inwood was held at Plainview Cemetery, Hicksville.

Gerard Burns

Long Time Resident

Gerard Burns, a 30-year resident of Breezy Point, passed away on May 27, 2001. He was born in Brooklyn and later relocated to the Rockaways. He attended the St. Thomas More church and was an active member of the Rockaway community.

Gerard belonged to several clubs, which include The Rockaway-Breezy Point Catholic Club, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Breezy-Point Golf Club and the American-Legion-Brooklyn Post. He proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the Army.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Winifred Burns; and a son, Gerard Burns, Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Blake; a grand daughter; Karen Blake and two grandsons; Kenneth and Kevin Blake.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor, Inc., was held at St. Johns Cemetery.

Edwin Purchell

Rockaway Native

Edwin Purchell, born in Walton, NY, was a 26-year resident of Rockaway Beach. He passed away on May 29, 2001.

He was a military veteran, and he is preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Purchell, and two brothers, Harry and William Purchell. He is survived by a sister, Dorothy Campo; two brothers, Eugene Fenton Purchell and Frank Smith; and a niece, Sarah McGonigle.

Jeanne Scheiner

Loving Grandmother

Services were held on Wednesday, May 30, for Jeanne Scheiner.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Louis Scheiner, and she is survived by two daughters, Phyllis and her husband Sam Mantle, Dr. Zona Scheiner and her husband Bennet Wolper; and a son, Dr. Irwin Scheiner.

Burial services were held at Mt. Ararat Cemetery.
