Ferry Delayed!

The long-awaited ferry service that is to provide daily transportation between Rockaway and Manhattan will not begin as scheduled on June 1, 2001. Ferry service is postponed, and although officials claim that they have every intention of providing a means of water-borne transportation for Rockaway, no new starting date has been proposed.

According to Brian Feeney, Public Affairs Director for Gateway, "the Riis landing site has been prepared and is fully equipped for ferry service." Only one important thing is missing from the equation, and that is the ferry.

Feeney said that Fox Navigation, the company contracted to operate the ferry, has been unable to secure a vessel that meets the requirements for the job.

"They need a specific kind of boat, of a particular size and capacity. They have been in negotiation but they have not been able to secure the proper vessel," said Feeney.

Feeney also said that Gateway and the other organizations involved in the project are "very committed to seeing the ferry service provided" and that they would work with Fox to help secure a boat. Congressman Weiner was assisting Fox directly to find the right vessel, facilitate negotiations and help speed things along.

According to Feeney, it is only a matter of time before the Rockaway ferry service begins. How much time, nobody knows.
