Mosquitoes Are No Small Problem
Anybody who looks back at past Issues of The Wave as we do will quickly understand that the mosquito problem in Rockaway is not new. Even a quick perusal will show that the problem goes back fifty years or more. While the problem is an old one, however, we do need to mix both new and old solutions to make outdoor life on the peninsula possible for many of those who live nearby Jamaica Bay. That includes the use of the newly-developed "mosquito magnets" that were used for the first time last summer season. They seem, at first glance, to do a good job of reducing the adult mosquito population. Then there are the pellets that kill the larvae. Those pellets have never proven to be very effective in Rockaway, but, as the old joke goes, "they can’t hurt." Spraying is another option, albeit not a politically correct solution. Spraying may be the most effective method and it may be needed in Rockaway. The people who live in the effected areas must do their part as well. Standing water cannot be allowed, either in old tires, in empty lots or in unused swimming pools. They are the true mosquito magnets. The bottom line is that the city needs to keep on top of the mosquito problem It may be a small problem for those who do not live nearby the bay, but for thousands of Rockaway residents the small insects are a large problem and one that dictates the way they live in summer months. That cannot be allowed to continue.
