What Parents Need To Know About Child Health Plus Child Health Plus covers many children under 19 who are not eligible for Children’s Medicaid. Some of these children live in families that earn too much to be eligible for Children’s Medicaid but not enough to be able to afford private insurance. Child Health Plus is also available to children who are not eligible for Children’s Medicaid because of their immigration status. All children enrolled in Child Health Plus receive their care from Medicaid managed care plans. Families must choose a health plan for their child from among those that serve their borough or neighborhood. Like private health insurance, Child Health Plus provides clearly defined benefits, which have some limitations. The benefit’s package is very broad, and covers most medical services like regular checkups, inpatient and outpatient hospital care, emergency care, prescription drugs, dental care, eyeglasses, hearing aids, some mental health services, and some durable medical equipment. Child Health Plus does not cover home health care and has restrictions on some categories of benefits, like mental health services and durable medical equipment. Families can apply for Child Health Plus at authorized enrollment sites in the community, which include the Joseph P. Addabbo Health Center. The staff will help families fill out the application form, figure out whether their children are eligible for Child Health Plus, what it will cost, and gather the necessary documents. The application form is called the "Growing Up Health" form. (The same form is used for Medicaid). Families can also apply directly to the Child Health Plan they have chosen. The Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula is available to assist families in choosing the right health plan for them. Depending on your household income, a family may have to pay a monthly charge for health coverage under Child Health Plus. The monthly charge for each child will be zero, nine dollars, five dollars, or the full premium, which varies between plans, but it is usually less than regular insurance costs. (These charges may change in the future). There are no co-payments for individual visits or other services. The full premium varies depending on the Child Health Plus insurance plan chosen.
