CB 14 Does Right Thing

Dear Editor;

Community Board 14 did a great service to one of Rockaway's many
communities. The board rejected the questionable and constantly changing
housing project proposal for the Beach 3 Street area. It was a battle between the local community and powerful and influential real estate developers. To the great relief of the residents of this well organized and eloquent group, a majority of those who voted rejected the developers' "plan".

Some board members remembered these developers' story presented to CB 14 and elected officials about 122 garden apartments for middle-income persons at Beach 24 Street and the beach. Our elected officials were influenced to write letters of support in order to get millions of dollars of grant money. The final result was to dump into the Wavecrest and Beach 24 Street area and thus into Rockaway a 122 unit six story building to continue the impact of saturating Rockaway with more low and very low income residents and thus destroy any hope of economic improvement for eastern Rockaway.

These board members will not be fooled again. We want our elected officials to support the community.
