for larger version       Patrol Cops Nab Bank Robber Keith Huling was arrested on Monday for robbing the Fleet Bank located on Beach 66 Street and Beach Channel Drive in Arverne. Police Officer Tom Courtney was on routine patrol Monday morning when he heard a call on the radio advising of the bank robbery at the Fleet Bank on Beach 66 Street in Arverne. According to 100th Precinct Commanding Officer Captain John Miller, Officer Courtney was responding in that direction when he came upon a suspicious looking man, later identified as Huling, walking along Beach 70 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Miller said that Courtney had already been observing the man when the hold-up alarm was radioed throughout the precinct. The patrol officers at the scene of the robbery received a full, detailed description of the robber from one of the bank’s tellers and that information was immediately on the radio. Courtney then, knowing his suspect matched the description, radioed for back-up. Since the bank teller said that the robber simulated a gun, the police were working under the assumption that the perp was armed and dangerous. With back-up right on the block, the two patrol unit officers nabbed Hurling, who was unarmed but in possession of a brown bag full of an undisclosed amount of cash. "It was great teamwork all the way around," said Captain Miller. "Courtney was the hero, Officer Sparrow, the back up, made the collar." Miller said that the officers at the scene of the robbery did a great job of getting the identification out within minutes of the incident. Huling, 37, of Manhattan, was charged with felony robbery, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
