Our Sympathies To The Locke Family

It is with regret that I note the untimely passing of Leon Locke.  I
express my sympathy to his wife, Susan and his mother Fannie.  

On Sunday, February 24, 2001, we attended the funeral services at the Parkside Chapel. Rabbi Joseph Weiss conducted the services.  Rabbi Weiss pointed out that Leon and Susan had known each other since childhood. He said that Leon was a man of the community and that he was dedicated to the Rockaways.  Rabbi Weiss
reminded us that God is our Shepherd and that we can take comfort and a sense of hope from the good memories that his mother and his wife take with them. Rabbi Weiss noted that for a mother there is no deeper sorrow and that for Susan, his wife, there is now an extreme void. Rabbi Weiss said that The Wave is a testimony to Leon Locke's life.  

John McLoughlin stated that Leon's
family and friends could take strength from the good memories and the blessings that Leon has given to his family.

One indication of the value of The Wave to the community is that people who move from the Rockaways to the four corners of the globe have The Wave sent to their new address.

On another note, you should be aware that Thursday, March 15 is Hunger Awareness Day.  It is startling to realize that one million six hundred thousand New Yorkers per month need to obtain food from food pantries, soup kitchens and other agencies that feed the hungry. The Hunger Action Network requests that every concerned person should
make an extra effort to: "volunteer at their local food pantry, or soup
kitchen, conduct a child's poster project, organize a food drive, organize a
community forum on hunger, invite others to see food programs in our area, write letters to the editor of the local publications and invite their
elected representative to volunteer at their local food program."

The celebration of Hunger Awareness Day has been taking place on March 15 for 11 years in New York State.  Hunger Awareness Day is an opportunity to help people who need assistance. Let's all make March 15 a day where we make a concerted effort to help our neighbors in need.

Please join us on Saturday, March 3, 2001, for the Queens St. Patrick's
Day Parade.  This is our 26th year. Thanks to Mike Benn, president; Owen Baxter, vice president; and James Conway Sullivan, president emeritus for leading this parade.  The St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee has 50 members who work all year long to raise the money that is needed to underwrite the parade. Each year it gets bigger and better. My husband Eugene Pasternak, my mother Dr. Geraldine D. Chapey and myself are members of the committee.  

The parade steps off at 1 p.m. from Beach 129 Street and Newport Avenue and continues to Beach 84 Street.

We hope that the weather is
clear and sunny on March 3. I look forward to seeing you along the parade route.
