Celebrate Life And Hope

Walk To Support Cancer Awareness

Even the youngsters come out to participate in Relay for Life.

By Susan Hartenstein

For those of us who search for a way to actively fight back against cancer while celebrating the lives of those affected by it, Relay for Life 2000 provides just such an opportunity. Who among us has not been personally affected by this disease—either oneself, or a beloved friend, or family member? Relay for Life is a fundraising event of the American Cancer Society designed to commemorate the lives of survivors, those who have not survived and those who have provided care to both. By raising money and awareness, it is an event designed to prevent the deaths of others.

Relay for Life 2000 will be held Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1 at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. It will run from 6 p.m. Friday to 12 noon Saturday. It is a volunteer-driven community event in which teams of participants take turns walking, running, rollerblading or even wheelchairing around a track all through the night. Team members bring tents, grills and the desire to make this an act of communion in putting out the message that cancer can be conquered. The first lap, the Survivor Lap, is reserved for cancer patients and survivors, and honors their courage and the hope for even further advances in cure rates. The second lap is the Caregiver Lap, honoring their courage, as well. A special Luminaria ceremony remembers those who have lost their battle and also honors those who have survived. Luminaria candles are lit at 10:00 p.m. and cast an inspiring glow throughout the night. Prizes are given to teams raising the most funds. The American Cancer Society will have a booth providing information and advice and increasing awareness that early detection saves lives.

Most teams are presently from Rockaway in this joint Brooklyn/Queens event, but more teams and team captains are being sought to make this effort a success. As Rosemary Murray, co-chairperson of this event so eloquently said, "We want to put the Rockaways on the map while doing good for people." Teams may be composed of family members, co-workers, friends, neighbors or anyone wishing to join with others in this effort. Each team is composed of eight to 15 people. There is a $10 registration fee for each member, with the exception of those running the Survivor Lap. Each member is asked to raise a minimum of $100. Teams will be given advice for fundraising and can be as inventive as they wish. Funds raised will go into research, education, advocacy, and patient services.

Relay for Life is an alcohol-free event that promotes a sense of community and hope. Security will be provided by Park Police and the appropriate identification will be required to enter the relay site. The campsites and track will be lit. Peninsula Hospital Center is providing a podiatrist and information on hospital services. American Cancer Society is providing a DJ and there will be music and dancing.

If you wish to participate in Relay for Life 2000 or wish further information, contact the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce at 253 Beach 116 street, Rockaway Park, or Villa Brown of the American Cancer Society at 97-77 Queens boulevard, Rego Park, New York 11374.
