Opposing Rehab Center

Dear Editor;

(In response to EFK’s letter in The Wave, April 22, 2000)

I would like to know why you singled out Bobbi Hart as the only objector to the new facility that was being built on Beach 102 street and the freeway? There were many other people at the meeting who voiced their disapproval.

What was objected to was the fact that it was destined to be a drug and alcohol rehab center being too close to four schools.

Most drug rehab’s have problems with "clients" hanging around the building with intentions of selling their methadone or "friends" selling their clean urine. Most churches in the area (St. Camillus, St. Rose of Lima, St. Francis de Sales, First Congregational, etc.) have facilities for AA meetings almost everyday or evening. These meetings are open to everyone.

When LIJ does close its facility in Far Rockaway, why don’t you try to get Peninsula to open one.

When the building was in the planning stages we were told that it would be for professional offices. Not for drug rehab!

I would rather see Hammels Senior Center move into this building.

PAT McCURRY
