Fishing Column 5.22

This week the bass slowed down and blues infested the area. The reason for this-the bass did not leave, the blues are feeding them. Bluefish are killers-they will bite the tail off a bunker, head off the next, even when full of food, they will continue to kill and maim the bunker. And, you guessed it! Who gets the harvest? Mr. Striped Bass. He goes around picking up all these maimed and dead chunks of bunker off the bottom and stays away from the shoreline.

A good trick to know is bass feeds against the tide, so if you see a school of bunker going with the tide, there’s a good chance there are no game fish around or they are not feeding.

When bunker are being driven against the tide, bass or weak fish are pushing them-drop your line at the opposite side of the school, opposite the direction of the tide, and the bass and weaker fish will be right there.

Ask yourself how many times you have seen a school of bunker and you say "I’ll go down-tide and wait for them," but they go the other way. This supply means there are no bass present or they are not feeding. Exploding bunker means bluefish.
